Brisbane – For rescuing about 45 dogs who had been trapped in the Tea Tree Gully Boarding Kennels & Cattery during the Adelaide Hills bushfire, the firefighters from the Paracombe and Tea Tree Gully branches of the South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) will receive Hero to Animals Awards from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Australia.

The bushfire that swept through the area reduced the building to rubble. All the cats and many of the dogs died in the blaze, but the volunteers of the CFS were able to rescue about 45 dogs. Paracombe CFS Capt. Darryl Hutchins, who tragically lost two of his own dogs in the fire, was able to revive a dog named Gus with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. For these efforts, the fire and rescue service will receive framed certificates and letters of appreciation from PETA.

“The compassion and heroism shown by members of the South Australian Country Fire Service are truly an inspiration”, says PETA Australia Director of Campaigns Jason Baker. “Adelaide residents are very fortunate to have emergency service personnel who are ready to protect and serve both residents and their beloved animal companions.”
