NEARLY NAKED PETA MEMBERS TO TELL G20 LEADERS TO ‘GO VEGAN’

Activists Will Highlight the Meat and Dairy Industries’ Vast Contribution to Climate Change

What:             Covered head to toe with little more than traffic-stopping green bodypaint, several PETA members will hold signs reading, “Go Green – Go Vegan”, at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre on Thursday. PETA’s point? That world leaders attending the G20 summit should sit up and take notice of the meat and dairy industries’ drain on the Earth’s resources and their responsibility for climate change.

“Whether it’s climate change, deforestation or the rampant pollution of natural resources, the meat industry is culpable”, says PETA Australia Director of Campaigns Jason Baker. “PETA’s motto reads, in part, that ‘animals are not ours to eat’, and we’re calling on all would-be environmentalists to go vegan.”

The United Nations recently concluded that raising animals for food is “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global” and that a global shift towards a vegan diet is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change. Going vegan also spares animals immense suffering: cows, pigs, chickens and other animals raised for their flesh have their horns, beaks, teeth, tails and testicles cut off – all without being given any painkillers. At slaughterhouses, animals have their throats slit and many are scalded to death while they’re still conscious.
