PETA Reminds City2Surf Runners That ‘All Meat Is Red Meat’ With Bloody Billboards
More than 85,000 City2Surf fun run participants flooded Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach today, only to be confronted by the image of a blood-soaked chicken slaughterhouse and PETA’s message that “All Meat Is Red Meat”.
The powerful billboards were designed to remind runners – who may believe that chicken flesh is somehow “less harmful” than red meat – that all animals killed for food die struggling in pools of blood, and flesh is never a health food.

Every Chicken is Someone
After greeting runners at the finish line, PETA’s mobile billboards visited various Bondi eateries, including those that sell the severed wings, legs, and breasts of sensitive, intelligent chickens who were killed at just six weeks old.
Chickens are clever, sentient individuals who have friends, use complex communications, and dream just like we do. Despite this, more than 750 million chickens are raised for food in Australia every year , confined to cages and barns before being shoved onto trucks and sent to slaughterhouses.
Once there, they’re dragged through electrified baths of water before being hoisted upside down to have their delicate throats slit.

Animal Flesh Is Killing Us And The Planet
No matter whose dead body it comes from, meat is far from a health food.
While red and processed meats are well-known carcinogens, ‘white’ meat like chicken is no better. Researchers from Italy’s National Institute of Gastroenterology found that study participants who ate more than 300g of poultry a week had a 27 per cent higher risk of dying than those who ate less than 100g and were twice as likely to die from gastrointestinal cancers.
On the flipside, research shows that an animal-free diet can reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity, stroke, many cancers, and even Alzheimer’s Disease.
Chicken Farms Breed Bird Flu
Australia has already seen devastating results from bird flu’s arrival on our shores, but if we don’t tackle the root cause – bird farms – it will only get worse, and another deadly pandemic may not be far behind.
In Australia, chickens are crammed into small, crowded spaces and forced to live in their own excrement, the ideal environment for viruses. The H5 strain has already infected wild mammals in Australia, including wiping out 13,000 baby seals.
Avian Flu is highly contagious and carries a high fatality rate. If it spreads to humans, we could be looking at one in two Aussies dead.
