Rest in Peace: Animal Rescuer Jesse, Killed While Saving Animals in Ukraine

It is with profound sadness that we share the news that Animal Rescue Kharkiv’s (ARK) friend and volunteer Jesse, was killed during a mission to rescue animals in the Donbas region.

ARK teams working in eastern Ukraine face constant danger from drone attacks and ongoing hostilities as they risk their lives to save abandoned and injured animals trapped by the war.

According to Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK), Jesse was helping rescue animals when he was critically injured in the attack. He was taken to the hospital in Kramatorsk but did not survive.

His death is heartbreaking. But Jesse will be remembered not for how he died, but for his extraordinary compassion for animals and the lives he helped save.

Jesse’s Legacy of Compassion

Jesse dedicated his life to the values that ARK stands for: He chose courage over indifference, compassion over fear, and action over silence. While others fled the danger, he went toward it, determined to save lives that could not save themselves. His death is a heartbreaking reminder that the cruelty of this war continues unabated.

We remember Jesse with enormous gratitude for the kindness he showed animals and for every life he helped save.

Animals Are Still in Danger in Ukraine

ARK’s teams and local partners continue to rescue abandoned and injured animals in eastern Ukraine despite the danger posed by ongoing hostilities. Several animal rescuers have been injured and even killed in Russian drone attacks while helping animals in the region.

Following the attack in which Jesse was fatally injured, ARK reported additional drone strikes on an Animal Safe House. The building caught fire, and the fire brigade called to the scene was also struck and burned. All the animals were moved to safety, and the evacuation of 80 animals continued as drone attacks persisted.

ARK also reported rescuing two 75-year-old women and their 15 cats, while 400 pigs at an animal sanctuary were awaiting evacuation.

Behind numbers like these are individuals. A frightened cat looking for somewhere to hide, a dog who has lost the familiar presence of their family, or a pig entirely dependent on humans to take them somewhere safer. For animals caught in war, the actions of compassionate humans like Jesse mean everything.
