Plant Wool Month: Wool Doesn’t Have to Come From Sheep

November is Plant Wool Month, a celebration of innovative, animal-free fibres made from plants.

When we hear the word “wool”, many of us immediately think of sheep. But wool doesn’t have to come from animals. Plant-derived materials made from cotton, hemp, flax, bamboo, soya and even food waste can offer stylish alternatives without exploiting sheep. PETA Australia’s Plant Wool Month materials also highlight emerging fibres made from sources such as nettles, flowers, oranges and pineapples.

And for sheep, that matters.

Sheep used for wool can endure painful mutilations, rough handling in shearing sheds and, ultimately, slaughter when they are no longer considered profitable. PETA investigations have repeatedly documented abuse in the global wool industry.

Plant wool gives us another way forward. Instead of breeding animals to produce fibres for us, we can turn to plants. From familiar favourites such as organic cotton and linen to innovative textiles made from hemp, soya, nettles and agricultural waste, there’s a growing world of animal-free options to explore.

This Plant Wool Month, rethink what keeps you warm. Sheep need their wool. We have innovative plant-based alternatives.
