PETA Announces Australia’s Best Vegan Toastie on National Toastie Day

Brisbane – Today, on National Toastie Day, Brisbane’s Melt Brothers has nabbed PETA’s Best Vegan Toastie Award for its delicious Vegan Hippy Cheese, which features basil pesto, grilled eggplant, roasted capsicum, rocket, tomato, and vegan cheese on artisan sourdough.

The winning toastie can be seen here.

“This vegan cheesy-melt toastie delivers huge flavour with zero cruelty,” says PETA spokesperson Emily Rice. “The dairy industry subjects cows to extreme suffering and also damages the environment, but no one has to give up tasty toasties in order to protect animals and the planet. Stores such as Melt Brothers make it easy to indulge in winter comfort eating without causing any harm.”

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – notes that cows are smart, social, sensitive animals who love their families and value their own lives. In the dairy industry, when their milk production wanes, they’re sent to the abattoir – where they’re shackled upside down and their throats are slit, sometimes while they’re still conscious.

Every person who goes vegan not only spares more than 200 animals a year profound misery and a terrifying death but also reduces his or her risk of suffering from heart attacks, obesity, diabetes, and numerous other ailments. And a report from the United Nations found that a global switch to vegan eating is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change.
