PETA TO HOME OF THE ARTS: TAKE ANIMALS OFF THE MENU FOR ‘PEPPA PIG’S SURPRISE’

Group Urges Venue to Go Meat-Free in Honour of Popular Piglet

Gold Coast – After learning that ‘Peppa Pig’s Surprise’ is coming to Home of the Arts (HOTA), PETA rushed a letter to the venue’s CEO, Criena Gehrke, urging her to honour the mischievous little pig by taking animals off the menu during the run – or even better, for good. As an added incentive, the group has offered to supply vegan ham or sausages for the opening show.

“Many of the young children who will cheer for Peppa would be horrified to learn that ham and sausages are made from pigs like her,” says PETA spokesperson Emily Rice. “Peppa shows others that she’s not a piece of bacon or a ham sandwich but rather an individual with emotions and the ability to feel joy. What better way to honour the live show’s message than by serving vegan meals?”

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – has documented that Australian farmers clip or grind down many piglets’ teeth and cut their tails off without any painkillers. After female pigs give birth, they’re confined to farrowing crates so small that they can’t even turn around, let alone fulfil their strong urge to build a nest as they would naturally do. They’re forcibly impregnated over and over again, and each litter of piglets is torn away from them after only a few weeks and transported to fattening pens before eventually being sent to slaughter.
