Will Adelaide Council Erect PETA Memorial to Honour Pigs Killed in Factory Farm Blaze?

Andgar piggery in Dublin, South Australia, a grotesque factory farm already being investigated for cruelty allegations, is back in the headlines after a fire reportedly claimed the lives of hundreds of pigs.

In a rapid response, PETA has written a letter to Adelaide Plains Council calling for the erection of a memorial plaque at the site to “honour the hundreds of pigs who no doubt screamed in agony while they burned alive”.

Every Pig is Someone

Like all animals, pigs are someone and deserve to live free from harm.

Pigs are playful, clever, sensitive, and empathetic. Like dogs in many ways, pigs can learn commands, recognise the humans they love, and enjoy socialising in family groups.

Mother pigs sing to their babies while they nurse them, just like humans do, and piglets often “make biscuits” while they feed, just like kittens!

Pigs even wag their tails when they’re happy, but often, their tails are cut off in the meat industry. This is just one of many mutilation measures employed to account for the fact that animals are kept in such cramped conditions that they sometimes turn on and bite each other in frustration.

Andgar Piggery Exposed for Cruelty

The site of Monday’s fire, Andgar Piggery, was the subject of a shocking Farm Transparency Project investigation released earlier this year.

In the footage obtained by investigators, live pigs were discovered living alongside — and even feeding on the carcasses of — dead pigs; abhorrent suffering which resulted in the euthanasia of fourteen pigs and 21 Animal Welfare Notices being brought against the piggery’s leadership.

No matter where they live, animals raised for food suffer needlessly, because no one needs meat.

Factory Farms: Prisons for Animals

While animals who live in outdoor systems are also abused, and always eventually have their throats slit, factory farms are especially cruel and deny animals everything important to them, even sunshine.

In Australia, 90% of pigs are confined to filthy factory farms without fresh air, sunshine, grass, or enrichment.

Despite being doting parents, at least 20% of mother pigs are locked in cruel sow stalls where they must feed their babies through bars and cannot even turn around to nuzzle them.
