“Embrace Vegans and Get Five Stars!”

Chef Dylan Cashman of The Blue Door restaurant in Surry Hills has been bombarded with one-star reviews for failing to offer animal-free options, which has prompted a sweet – but cheeky – gift from PETA.

We’ve sent the chef sent a PETA empathy kit and five vegan chocolate stars, with a note reading, “Imagine all the stars you could earn by embracing empathy – and vegans!”

PETA isn’t condoning fake reviews, but we do agree that failing to cater for vegans in 2025 makes your menu outdated and unethical. Animal-free menus are not only kinder, better for the planet, and healthier – they also give imaginative chefs a chance to flex their innovation muscles to deliver high-end plant foods like those seen in Michelin-starred eateries the world over.

From Paris to London to New York, fine dining animal-free menus are more popular than ever as diners seek compassionate cuisine that reflects what we now know about animals. Cows have best friends, pigs recognise their own names, sheep wag their tails when they’re happy, and chickens enjoy solving logic problems.

Australians pride themselves on being “animal lovers”, but over 600 million animals are slaughtered for their flesh in Australia every single year, and 95 per cent of chickens and pigs eaten spend their short and miserable lives on filthy, crowded factory farms. All animals bred for meat end up suffering a violent, agonising death.

Aside from being cruel, meat and other products taken from animals are environmentally destructive and increase our risk of heart disease, many cancers, and diabetes. Conversely, an animal-free diet dramatically reduces disease risk and an individual’s food-related carbon footprint by 75 per cent.
