Art Meets Activism: Portrait of Ingrid Newkirk Nominated for Prestigious Award

Australian artist Jaq Grantford has been named a finalist in 2025’s Portia Geach Memorial Award, Australia’s most prestigious portrait prize for women artists, and her subject is none other than Ingrid Newkirk, the founder of PETA and a fearless force for animals.

The powerful portrait, titled The Animal Advocate, captures not only Ingrid’s likeness but also her unwavering spirit and lifelong dedication to animals. It is bold, unapologetic, and deeply moving, just like Ingrid herself. With her brushstrokes, Jaq celebrates a woman who has spent her life challenging industries that exploit animals and inspiring millions to live with compassion.

Known for her ability to convey the essence of her subjects, Jaq has painted some of Australia’s most notable figures and has won multiple accolades, including the Darling Portrait Prize and the Archibald Prize People’s Choice Award.

The Portia Geach Memorial Award has been celebrating the talent of Australian women artists since 1965, and we’re thrilled to see a portrait of an animal rights icon recognised on this national stage.

You can see the painting in person at the S.H. Ervin Gallery in Sydney from 19 September to 2 November. If you’re in the area, don’t miss it—and while you’re there, take a moment to reflect on the animals whose lives have been changed because of women who dared to speak out. Feeling inspired to follow in Ingrid’s footsteps? Join PETA’s Activist Network today to become part of a growing movement to help animals.
