Video Reveals Frogs Sold at Bangkok Markets Still Conscious and Breathing After Being Sliced Open

New undercover footage exposes widespread abuse and neglect of frogs in Thailand’s frog-legs industry. At one Bangkok market, at least 100 conscious frogs were sliced open—with no sedation or pain relief—and displayed on their backs with their organs exposed out from their abdomens. Some of their legs were moving from side to side, and others’ necks were moving up and down—a sign that they were still alive and breathing.

PETA Asia’s investigators also documented that live frogs were bound for slaughter and export, crammed into severely crowded plastic bags filled with water and ice, with little access to air. As the frogs scrambled over each other in a desperate attempt to reach the top of the bag, the investigator asked the worker, “They will be alive the whole time?” The worker responded, “Yes, still alive … and you cut the stomach, and then put the legs together.” On a different farm, PETA Asia’s investigators found a dead frog covered in bugs among several other frogs in a concrete tub of murky water.

Frogs are fascinating individuals who can feel pain, joy, and fear, but in Thailand’s frog-meat industry, they’re left to languish in tightly packed plastic bags before they’re chopped apart while they’re still alive.

PETA Asia’s previous investigations into the frog meat industry have revealed that the amphibians are beheaded in Indonesia and skinned alive in Vietnam.

How You Can Help

Please, never buy or consume frog legs. If you see any restaurants serving them, anywhere in the world, please write to the manager and ask that they remove them from their menu.

As consumers, you can help end this suffering – this nightmare will continue as long as there’s demand for frogs’ legs. But you have the power to make a difference. By choosing to go vegan, you can take a stand against cruelty. Will you join us in creating a kinder world for all animals?
