PETA UK’s Christmas Gift to Prince William: Wool Made from Beer

Sydney – As Christmas approaches, PETA UK has sent beer lover Prince William a special gift – a soft and luxurious jumper by Sonachic, made from brewery waste. The present comes courtesy of PETA UK 2025 Fashion Award winners Tandem Repeat, who have developed this planet-conscious, animal-free material, and follows PETA UK’s first annual Plant Wool Month in November, dedicated to celebrating planet- and animal-friendly wools made from plants rather than tormented sheep.

“We’re wishing Prince William a merry and compassionate Christmas with fashion worth raising a pint to,” says Senior Campaigns Advisor to PETA Australia Mimi Bekhechi. “We hope that this kind and Earth-friendly gift will inspire everyone to move away from wearing animals, choosing cosy and ethical plant wools instead.”

Sheep can recognise the faces of at least 50 other sheep and will wag their tails when they’re happy. In the wool industry, farmers commonly sever lambs’ tails and castrate the males without pain relief. PETA entities’ exposés of wool operations around the world found routine cruelty to sheep, who were beaten, punched, kicked, thrown, and slammed to the ground by workers. Because shearers are usually paid by volume, not by the hour, they’re incentivised to work quickly and often leave sheep with gaping, open wounds sewn shut with no pain relief.

Sheep are second only to cows in the global production of methane, which is 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in warming the Earth. The wool industry also generates substantial amounts of faecal waste, contributing to soil erosion and the degradation of ecosystems.
