PETA Reminds That ‘All Meat is Red Meat’ With Bloody Billboards at City2Surf
09.08.2026
Sydney – Runners crossing the City2Surf finish line today were confronted by the sight of a blood-soaked chicken slaughterhouse and the message that “All Meat Is Red Meat”, thanks to billboards placed on Bondi Beach by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The powerful images were designed to remind runners – who may prefer chicken flesh to red meat – that all animals killed for food die struggling in pools of blood, and flesh is never a health food.

“Some fitness fanatics have swallowed the lie that chicken flesh is a ‘cleaner’ option, but all meat is a dead animal”, says PETA Executive Agent Mimi Bekhechi. “We wanted to remind runners that Heartbreak Hill’s got nothing on the agony chickens endure in slaughterhouses, and that saving animals, improving your health, and reducing your impact on Earth means running away from meat and going vegan.”
After greeting runners at the finish line, the bike billboards visited various eateries around Bondi, including those that sell the severed wings, legs, and breasts of chickens that were only around six weeks old.
Chickens are clever, sentient individuals who have friends, use complex communications, and dream just like humans do. Despite this, more than 750 million chickens are raised for food in Australia every year, confined to crowded cages and barns before being hoisted upside down to have their delicate throats slit.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – points out that when it comes to the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a chicken is a dog is a boy. For more information, please visit PETA.org.au and follow PETA on Facebook and Instagram.
