How to Enjoy Bacon Without Killing Pigs

Everyone knows that pigs used for their flesh suffer immensely. So as International Bacon Day approaches, here’s our guide to celebrating the day without harming these smart, wonderful animals:

1. Buy Some Ready-Made Vegan Bacon

Did you know that there are heaps of vegan bacon brands available? Why kill and cook pigs when you can simply pick up one of these easy alternatives instead?

2. Enjoy a Delicious Restaurant Meal

As vegan eating becomes increasingly popular, restaurants are catching on and offering delectable plant-based options to cater to compassionate customers. Here are some of our favourite restaurants that feature vegan bacon on the menu:

Lord of the Fries – New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia

We’re big fans of vegetarian fast-food chain Lord of the Fries. And its Parma and Poutine burgers feature tasty soy bacon that will satisfy your taste buds like you wouldn’t believe.

The B.EAST – Victoria

Melbourne’s coolest vegan night, “Mock the Casbah”, serves up a rotating drool-worthy menu, including the Fat Vegan burger – a “bacon cheeseburger” complete with mock fried “chicken” poppers. Make sure you’re very hungry when you visit.

A traditional hot-dog joint is not where you’d expect to find vegan bacon, but 5 Dogs is proof that the vegan revolution is spreading like wildfire. This clever eatery knows that people want compassionate menu choices, and it obliges with its yummy vegan hot dog options.

Mister Nice Guy’s BakeShop – Victoria

Enjoy a vegan BLT Bagel and then satisfy your sweet tooth at this fully vegan bakery in Ascot Vale, Melbourne. Brunch never looked this good.

Pizza Design Co – New South Wales

Go on – throw some vegan bacon on a pizza. We won’t judge you. This is yet another traditional restaurant cleverly meeting the demand for plant-based options. Vegan-friendly pizza bases, dairy-free mozzarella, and a huge variety of toppings (including faux bacon) rule the menu. Oh, and there’s also an Oreo Pizza for dessert!

‘Bacon’ Blanket Breakfast Rolls

"Bacon" Blanket Breakfast Rolls (Vegan)

** Watch in HD **If you haven't already heard, Rice Paper Bacon – or "Laekon" as the inventors have coined it – is the newest vegan craze. It's quick, simple and addictive, and just about everything "bacon" should be. But what it's not (until now) is wrapped around a breakfast fry-up, some melty cheese, and avocado, and baked to crispy bacon blanket perfection. So, we're bringing you the "Bacon" Blanket Breakfast Roll. You're welcome. RECIPE HERE: (makes 2 "bacon" breakfast blankets)Ingredients: 4 rice paper sheets FOR THE FRY-UP & FILLING Vegan butter or oil for frying, as needed 3-4 mushrooms 2 frozen hash browns (we used Birds Eye Australia)4 cherry tomatoes Parsley, to taste1-2 slices vegan cheese (we used MyLife Bio Cheese Cheddar) As much avocado as desired (optional – we weren't too fussed over the avo in this one) FOR THE "BACON" PASTE: 2 tsp tamari or soy sauce 2 tbsp tomato sauce (ketchup) 1 tbsp smoked paprika (smoked is important) 2 tbsp nutritional yeast 1 tbsp garlic powder 50 ml cold water Salt and pepper to taste Method: 1. Preheat oven to 200ºC.2. Chop up the mushrooms and tomatoes, and slice the hash browns and cheese into thin slices. 3. Melt the butter (or add the oil) and sauté mushrooms until they begin to lose their moisture.4. Add in hash browns and cook until soft enough to break apart with wooden spoon, at which point mix the hash and mushrooms together to make the base of the filling.5. Add in tomatoes, parsley, salt and pepper to taste, and mix through the filling. 6. Fry filling in pan until tomatoes begin to soften and turn off the heat. 7. In a small bowl, mix together all ingredient for the "bacon" paste, adding more or less water as needed. 8. Briefly soak two of the rice paper sheets at a time (they will stick together once wet and create a more realistic bacon-like texture, but you can just use one sheet if you prefer) until soft, and transfer to a plate. 9. Spoon fry-up filling, cheese slices and avocado onto the middle of the rice paper sheet, and wrap up tightly. 8. Transfer to a lined baking tray and liberally coat both sides of the blanket with the bacon paste. 9. Bake in preheated oven for 20-30 minutes, or until crispy to the touch. Let cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
