Dog Plucked From Log Floating off Great Barrier Island

For Immediate Release:

20 June 2014

Auckland – For rescuing a dog who was stranded on a large log near Smokehouse Bay, the officers and crew of the inshore patrol vessel HMNZS Haweawill receive a Hero to Animals Award from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Australia.

The dog, named Tiny, had been perched on the log for some time. It took four members of the vessel’s 33-member crew to rescue Tiny, who was taken ashore and reunited with his guardians a short time later. For these efforts, the crew of the Hawea will receive a framed certificate and a letter of appreciation from PETA.

“The compassion and heroism shown by members of the New Zealand Navy are truly an inspiration”, says PETA Australia Director of Campaigns Jason Baker. “New Zealand residents are very fortunate to have service personnel who are ready to protect and serve both residents and their beloved animal companions.”
